All of the American Philatelic Society shows i attended were great...I thought the New York Mega Shows at Madison Square Garden and the Javits center were huge...UNTIL i saw Washington 2006 ! It was just overwhelming..it was truly an International Show with vendors and collectors from all over the globe..and i traveled a mere 350 miles !!!

I just want to second the comment about attending an APS show -- whether the larger summer show or the smaller winter show -- whenever it comes to your area.
I think the APS does a great job of showcasing philately at its best. Unlike some smaller commercial shows, there are no beanie babies and the like -- just stamps and the things they stick to.
While there are are high-level exhibits and high-end dealers, there are also dealers there at all price points, including some $1 cover and penny stamp areas. (I hope I'm remembering those prices correctly.) -- In fact, dealers who are willing to make that kind of material available at those special areas of the show have a reduced booth price there.
There are beginner classes, an Antiques Roadshow-type area where people can bring in and ask questions about the collection their Aunt Gertrude left them, plus the club meetings of a number of philatelic groups.
I had the fortunate opportunity to attend the London 2000 show, and the PhilaNippon 2001 shows (both decennial shows, like the ---6 shows in the US), and even though they were sometimes in grander settings, the high booth costs meant that dealers usually just brought their rarities. That's great, but it was hard to find a bargain there.
With the APS shows, you really could find material for all budget types.
And the admission is always free. (Definitely not true at London and Tokyo.)
(And, no, I am not a compensated endorser. 
Just very satisfied with those shows.)

Dave, i am looking forward to the APS show in Hartford less than a two hour drive through Connecticut but we will stay over and spend two days at the show. You are right..The APS wants to cater to collectors with all kinds of stamp budgets..there are booths that sell 10 cent individual stamps and nothing over a dollar. We were at the last Hartford show and a woman had a dollar booth..she said she just wanted to clear everything out and she was not kidding..one guy bought 1200 duck stamps from her..nothing exotic but they probably averaged 6 bucks or so apiece !

My personal favorite was the Columbian Expo in Chicago in the 90s. I was in the Czeslaw Slania study group at the time. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a meet and greet where he autographed any pieces we brought with us. Awesome! Super fun week.
