I have just received my grandfather's collection and have been going through it. I started my own album from his stamps that he had stored in glassine envelopes which most were mint never hinged stamps. He had several large cardboard boxes of stamps on paper that he'd acquired over the years.

The back story here is that he passed away in 1969 and I was born in 1970. I never got to meet him or get to know him, but I'm learning a lot about him through the stamps he collected. He served in WWII and collected mostly US regular, commemoratives, airmails, and first day covers.

At this time, I'm definitely not selling his collection, but want to know the best way to work through the collection. I've joined the APS and am reading everything possible in order to get a feel as to what to work on. But, I'd like the advice of those whose experience out stretches mine.

Thanks and I'm glad you've welcomed me in this group.

Welcome, Stan! I cannot tell you how and what to collect, or the best system for organizing your collection - I have been collecting since 1958 and am still trying to figure it all out. I just do what feels good and enjoy the moment. However, there is no shortage of advice here, so be prepared. Big Grin

re: Brand New Philatelist in NC

Hi Stan,
First off, welcome to Stamporama. Very glad to have you with us.

I can relate to what you are feeling about your Grandfather's collection. I felt the same way when I received my father's collection. There is something of the collector that gets carried on in the collection. It could be as simple as seeing that what you have in the collection are things that he liked and went to the trouble of collecting, and hence you learn more of him. You didn't have the opportunity to know your grandfather, but for me, when I get back and work in an area that I know my Dad enjoyed, it always brings the memories of him back to me.

Regards ... Tim.

re: Brand New Philatelist in NC

Well, I've been surfing sites for the last month trying to wrap my brain around what I should do. His albums are all hinged and the stamps in my album are mounted. It seems that everything I'm reading says that never hinged is the way to go. Also, I don't know if I could hinge a stamp anyway. Although I think there are probably 10,000 new hinges in various sizes in his collection.

There's a lot of history too in his first day covers from WWII. He got some of those first day issues autographed by the leaders of that era.

I'm overwhelmed with how to work through it. I look forward to any and all advice. Thanks for the great welcome!

I think I would leave the Albums he has worked on in tact as they are. This is just advice for sentimental reasons. At least for a good while and work on your own Album or Albums. Starting fresh. You can use the stamps he has collected but not already mounted for your own collection though if you so chose. You never said if they were U.S. or World Wide. I hinge my used and Mount my Mint. Except the real old Stamps 1935 and before. They are all mounted.

re: Brand New Philatelist in NC

I'm definitely leaving all of his albums in place. My albums are from the stamps he'd not hinged or mounted. He has so many worldwide and US stamps. Most of the worldwide are cancelled.

Yes, my own twist. I enjoy history especially between 1929 and 1945. I know that Franklin Roosevelt was a huge collector, and since my grandfather collected during that time period it makes it even more interesting.

It started as a research project a month ago to get to know my grandfather better since I never got to meet him, but I think I've been bitten by the philately bug.

I've uncovered so many neat things in his collection including correspondence from friends in both the Pacific Theater and European Theater of War.

I'm thinking I'm going to work my collection from that standpoint and probably expand to worldwide during that era.

Thanks Tinman and Phil.

StanC,

Welcome to stamp collecting and SOR!

I have collected since I was 11, and now, 40 years later... ;-)

History and stamp collecting are a great combination--I love history also, esp. Civil War and British history.

I wish you well in your new hobby, especially with what you have inherited. There are many here who will be more than happy to share their knowledge with you.

Look forward to seeing you around here on the Discussion Board and also the Auction/Approvals!

Welcome Stan!

Your descriptions of the autographed covers are so cool! I'm sure I'm not the only one who would really enjoy seeing a few scans if you get a minute or two. You are so lucky to have inherited this legacy. Enjoy and, again, welcome!

Also - I'm so impressed that you've already joined the APS and are digging in reading and researching. Both of those will pay huge dividends for you as you travel the road to becoming an experienced philatelist. Way to go!!! Applause

And another hearty, welcome aboard Stan. It sounds like you have done your homework ahead of time and made several great decisions already, in the way you are going to collect and also in joining the APS and of course SOR. Many hundreds of years of stamp collecting to be found here on SOR, so you shouldn't have problems finding answers to any questions you may have, from very friendly collectors. One of the best benefits of working your own personal collection is the satisfaction you find in collecting what you want and how you what to collect it. Good luck in your new endeavor.

Thanks. Are you any kin to my boyhood hero, "The Lone Ranger"?

There is so much information here, and there seem to be people who have a Doctorate of Philately. Those doctors seem to provide the best information to help us newbies make heads or tails of what works, what doesn't, and how to dive head first in the wonderful world of stamp collecting.

I'm still trying to figure out what to do first in getting the most understanding of the stamps and the history behind them in my grandfather's collection.

As always, I will appreciate any advice.
